Salzburg

A bishopric was founded in Salzburg in the eight century during the Christianization of Bavaria. This became an archbishopric 798 and like many other bishops in the Holy Roman Empire had the archbishops of Salzburg a considerable political influence. They received the status of imperial prince 1278 and its borders correspond more or less with the modern Austrian part state of Salzburg. This territory was secularized during the Napoleonic wars and was given as an electorate to Ferdinand of Habsburg as a compensation for Tuscany, which he had previously ruled. But only two years later became Salzburg a part of Austria and Ferdinand got this time the grand duchy of Würzburg as compensation.
