Grenadier Corps

Århusiske National Regiment

Oldenborgske National Regiment
Drawings by Worgewitz from 1728 depicting Danish uniforms. The cuffs for the national militia soldiers do not correspond to the regulations from 1711 and 1716 which are reported below. For all regiments, the facing colours are also darker than they were in real life.

The Danish uniform regulation introduced on 24 October 1711 not only meant that the Danish army would henceforth be dressed in red coats. To distinguish the different regiments, some of them also received stripes of various colours on their cuffs. The exact design of these new cuffs does not seem to be completely certain as there are different descriptions in the literature. Therefore, on this page I have made a verbatim account of the information in my literature and included the pictures of the cuffs from these books.

The regulation of 1711 covered only the regiments that were at home in Denmark and not the regiments in the auxiliary corps that participated in the War of the Spanish Succession in the service of the Maritime Powers until 1714. After these regiments had returned to Denmark, a new uniform regulation was issued in 1716 which covered the whole army. Some regiments then had their cuffs changed and later in the 1720s further changes took place as can be seen from the drawings that Worgewitz made in 1728 (some of them are seen above), albeit that Worgewitz's depictions often did not correspond to reality.

A contemporary plate illustrating the appearance of the m/1716 cuffs can be found at the bottom of this page, but this does not seem to be entirely credible either. Unfortunately, there are no contemporary colour images of Danish uniforms from the time before Worgewitz's drawings. What we have are Rosenborg Castle's relief's from 1704-1706 which can be seen below, and which show how large the sleeves were at this time. Then we also have an engraving from 1709 that shows the Grenadier Corps' probably atypical triangular cuffs at the time of Christian Gyldenløve's funeral (1703). That picture is on another page.

1711 and 1716 Regulation Cuffs

Below, I compare my most important sources for the appearance of the cuffs. The plate from 1716, an article by Daniel Schorr and two uniform books by Karsten Skjold Petersen. I have also had look in Lars-Eric Höglund's uniform book about the Danish army. Unless otherwise noted, Schorr's images describe both m/1711 and m/1716. Skjold Petersen does not actually describe the regulations themselves, but rather how the design really looked like when the uniforms were issued to the regiments.

The greatest uncertainty appears to be the prince regiments and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Danish regiments. For the prince regiments, both Karstens Skjold Petersen and Lars-Eric Höglund follow the order of the plate and not Schorr. Regarding the numbered "Danish regiments", Höglund, on the other hand, follows Schorr, while Skjold Petersen is considerably vaguer in his second book. In his first book from 2005, Skjold Petersen simply stated that their appearances were unknown. But in the absence of information about why the plate is not reliable, I have chosen to follow it on my own pages.

Daniel Schorr's Article

Below follows a compilation of the information about the Danish uniform regulations from 1711 and 1716 that Daniel Schorr had published on the now defunct website www.northernwars.com. This particular section was an abridged version of Daniel Schorr's article on Danish-Norwegian uniforms 1709-1720 which was included in The Courier, Vol. VIII, No. 2 (1988). The black and white images below were the only ones found in that article. The colouring above is therefore my own and is based on the text in Schorr's article. The regiments in red text were included in the auxiliary corps that was in the service of the Maritime Powers until 1714 and they were therefore not included in the regulation from 1711.

The Plate from 1716

Below is a plate showing how the Danish army's cuffs should look like according to the 1716 regulation. (Rigsarkivet, Landetatens arkiv, Krigskancelliet). The image has become somewhat darker here than it is in Karsten Skjold Petersen's book from 2005, from which I have taken it.
