Oldenburg and Delmenhorst

Oldenburg was originally a county within the tribal duchy of Saxony. The fall of duke Heinrich the Lion 1180 meant that the counts of Oldenburg thereafter was only subordinated to the emperor. But before then had the county of Wildeshausen been detached from Oldenburg through inheritance 1143. Additional partitions of Oldenburg occurred 1278, 1440 and 1577, each time was it partitioned in Oldenburg and Delmenhorst but because the lines that ruled Delmenhorst became extinct was that part repeatedly reunited with Oldenburg. Christian VI became king of Denmark and Norway 1448 and ceded his share of Oldenburg to his brother Gerhard 1454. Christian's line of the house of Oldenburg inherited Oldenburg again in 1667 but exchanged it 1773 with the duchy of Holstein-Gottorp. The new count Friedrich August became elevated to duke 1777 and from 1815 was Oldenburg a grand duchy.
