Livonian Prince Bishoprics

= Ösel-Wieck   = Dorpat   = Courland   = Riga

Besides the territory of the Livonian order there were four prince bishoprics in Livonia during the Middle age, the most important of these was ruled by the archbishop of Riga. As a consequence of collapse of the Livonian confederation during the Livonian war 1558-1583 and the threat from Russia the prince bishopric of Riga together with the Livonian order united with Lithuania 1562. Russia had by then already conquered the prince bishopric of Dorpat. The two remaining states, Ösel-Wieck and Courland, were sold to the Danish prince Magnus of Holstein at the same time. His territories were later split between Denmark, Poland-Lithuania and Sweden.
