The Netherlands
The Netherlands was the name of a much larger territory than the present
kingdom during the 16th century. At that time it belonged to
Spain but the northern provinces declared them selves independent 1581 while
the southern provinces that are present day Belgium remained under Spanish
rule. The official name of this new state was the United Netherlands and it was alternatively
ruled by a hereditary stadtholder or under republican forms by a
raads-pensioner.

* = All stadtholders were also counts of
Nassau. These stadtholders
were actually only stadtholders of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland
and Overijssel. The other provinces (Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe)
were ruled by a separate branch of the house of Nassau and their stadtholders
are listed on the page with the
regents of Frisia. The stadtholders of Holland, Zeeland and Utrecht who
served before the Dutch independence are listed together with the
regents of Holland.
