The name Provence comes from the Roman province
Provincia Narbonensis. After having been a part of various Germanic
states during the early middle age it became an independent kingdom 855. This
kingdom that was also called Lower Burgundy united with Juran kingdom 933
and created the kingdom of Burgundy. In Provence a county ruled by the
Bosonidian dynasty evolved. The county was in the beginning often ruled by
several counts at the same time whereupon the senior usually had the title
marquis. The title marquis was then inherited by the counts of Toulouse who
later got the northern part when Provence was partitioned in 1125. As a part
of the kingdom of Burgundy the county of Provence was incorporated in
the Holy Roman Empire 1033 but it was later united with France when its last
count bequeathed it to the French heir.
